The Sanje Waterfall is one of the most famous sights of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, with water cascading a spectacular 183 metres above the fertile valley of the Kilombero. A two hour trek up through the lush rainforest brings you out on the top of the falls, with an unrivaled view east across the sugar plantations and on to the Selous Game Reserve.
Further upstream along a forest trail you will find a couple of smaller falls, with approachable plunge pools providing a welcome opportunity for a cooling swim in the icy cold waters of the Sanje River. The rainforest is thick with a diverse range of birds, plant and other life, and you are extremely likely to spot troops of monkeys such as the Black and White Colobus, or if you are lucky the rare Sanje Mangabey or Udzungwa Red Colobus. African violets grow profusely in their natural environment in the spray of the falls, and over a thousand butterfly species dart between the foliage.
The hike back down from the Sanje Falls is equally fascinating and provides a further opportunity of views and lookout points across the breathtaking view. Your alternative, if you can't bring yourself to leave such a peaceful spot, is to arrange Special Camping through the Udzungwa Forest Campsite. You may choose to spend the night sleeping under canvas alongside the falls at the top of the cliff, listing the the night sounds of the forest and watching for the huge eyes of bush babies peering down from the trees. In the morning, you can take breakfast on the very edge of the waterfall, enjoying the beautiful African sunrise across the open plains of the Selous.
