Udzungwa Forest Camp is situated right on the border of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, close to the National Park Headquarters and main gate at Mangula. The large grassy field is right on the border of the pristine rainforest and offers excellent views of the forest canopy, in which there are several species of monkey, including the endemic Udzungwa Red Colobus, the remarkable Sanje Crested Mangebey, and the Black and White Colobus. A number of different hornbill species fly in over the forest edge and settle in trees along the borders of the rainforest in large numbers every evening at sunset, and the valley echoes with their distinctive calls.
Hondo Hondo camp has luxury en-suite tents for our top end accommodation. More information can be found at The Lodge Website
For those who prefer walls and a roof to camping, but want to keep their costs to a minimum, Udzungwa Forest Camp offers four traditional Swahili Thatched Huts. Comfortably furnished, well-kept, and spacious, these double rooms offer a unique and exciting alternative to camping under canvas or staying in an everyday hotel room.
The traditional thatched huts lie on a rise overlooking the campsite and with a view out across the Kilombero Valley. The thatched huts are shaded by a teak plantation which is popular with Trumpeter Hornbills and the elegant Black and White Colobus Monkey.
Udzungwa Forest Campsite is set in a spacious field situated away from the road with great views up across the forest canopy of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, and out over the lush green Kilombero valley.
The facilities available at the Udzungwa Forest Campsite include a well-equipped cooking area with two built-in charcoal barbeque areas, a large washing-up sink and preparation surface. Around the camping area and on hill overlooking the valley are seating areas for guests to sit, eat and relax in the evening or drink coffee and eat breakfast first thing in the morning.
There is an attractive fire pit onsite, surrounded by comfortable natural seating, from which to sit and gaze at the stars in the African night sky. The campsite of course also has a clean and well-maintained shower and toilet block for use of all guests. The Lozenge Bar and Reception area, currently under construction, will sell essential snack foods, cold beer and soft drinks, postcards and a range of other goods. At the moment our helpful staff, onsite 24 hours, will provide you with cold drinks and snacks delivered to your tent or banda on request.
Should any visitor come to Tanzania without camping equipment, a range of tents, mattresses, camp beds and other such essentials are available to rent from our on site staff.
